New role for a veteran performer: Desktop publishing with the Apple II?
Article Abstract:
The Apple II could function as part of a desktop publishing system because of the capabilities of Adobe Systems' PostScript page description language and Apple's Laserwriter, but neither Synergetics' Applewriter-Laserwriter Utilities nor S. Anthony Studios' Laser Utilities Volume 1 enable the Apple II to create much more than the simplest of documents. Applewriter-Laserwriter Utilities uses Applewriter as a base from which PostScript is driven, and the user must have a thorough knowledge of Applewriter and PostScript commands. Applewriter, though, was not intended to drive laser printers and is not capable of communications during printing; nor can the utility program use a hard disk. Laser Utilities also requires a substantial knowledge of PostScript and is very poor in its explication of the programming needed to drive the Laserwriter. Good Apple II PostScript drivers are possible, but software developers seem to be more interested in the money to be made in the Macintosh market.

Desktop music scores
Article Abstract:
Music publishing software is available for various personal computer systems; the software's impact is especially significant for composers and copyists. Available packages, though somewhat limited and cumbersome, are vast improvements over manual methods of music printing. Moreover, music that has not been commercially profitable can now be preserved, maintained, and distributed in low volumes and at low costs. Music publishing programs typically involve more than editing features that are analogous to word processing functions; special features, such as an automatic-transposition-of-score capability, are often included.
