Bleeding edge
Article Abstract:
Kaleida Labs and Microsoft Corp's Consumer Systems Group (CSG) are developing competing systems architectures for the delivery of multimedia information to a variety of computer and consumer platforms. Kaleida was charted by joint founders IBM and Apple to create a standard multimedia operating system format that would run on on a variety of devices, facilitate the creation of multimedia software and provide a catalyst for the development of new multimedia delivery products. Microsoft's CSG is also developing its Modular Windows operating systems as a scalable implementation of the Windows technology that can run on multimedia players and other intelligent devices. Kaleida's system is likely to be the more comprehensive and powerful technology, but Modular Windows will be useful to those already committed to the Windows environment.

NextStep publishing power tools
Article Abstract:
Three very good desktop publishing software tools have been introduced for the NeXTStep 3.0 operating system: the $695 Virtuoso illustration software from Altsys, the $995 Image image processing package from Appsoft and the $795 PasteUp 1.1 desktop publishing software from RightBrain Software. The programs give the NeXTStep environment professional-level publishing capabilities comparable to those available on the Macintosh computer. Virtuoso is a 'dream' graphics tool that includes outstanding text handling and typographic functions and is better than any other Macintosh, Windows or NeXTStep illustration package. Image includes numerous painting, photo retouching and color correction tools, and is comparable to Adobe PhotoShop. PasteUp 1.1 is easier to use than PageMaker but has the desktop publishing precision of QuarkXPress.
