Nuances 2.0: this French photo editing program puts a revolutionary new twist on the way you work
Article Abstract:
The $950 Windows-based Nuances 2.0 software package from Fovea Expert is the first object-oriented tool for editing bit-mapped photo images. This highly useful and flexible capability enables the editing of any part or mask of an image as a bit map independent of the background until the component is frozen in place. The boundaries can also function as independently editable objects until they are deleted. Nuances 2.0 also includes the usual range of image editing tools plus Dynamic Data Exchange with major data base management systems, a custom dithering function and support for major compression and image standards. Drawbacks include minimal documentation, a lack of a way for plugging in third-party enhancements, a limited number of filters and automatic prepress adjustments and lack of support for the Scitex format. The software was rated 4.5 stars on a scale of five.

International report
Article Abstract:
CeBIT (Centrum fur Buro und Information Technik), the world's largest computer exposition, took place in Hannover, Germany, and covered half a square mile of displays. The latest trends in publishing were evident at the event, including the growing use of intranets and new innovations in telephony. Of all the different products exhibited at CeBIT, Ni-Tech's RamGate program was one of the most impressive. The program improves Windows memory management by allocating RAM to applications in contiguous parcels. This results in more efficient memory management and the virtual elimination of General Protection Faults. ICL Information Technologies Center also offered its Commands program to online publishers. Commands is able to compose PDF documents on the fly, depending on the needs of the document user. The system allows the administrator to track usage and reader habits.

Publishers flock to Hannover to see the latest
Article Abstract:
The publishing industry is not as heavily represented at the Mar 1997 CeBIT computer show as in years past, but a number of vendors showcase products that promise to have an impact on the electronic publishing industry. Panasonic's new CR-585 24x CD-ROM drive offers surprising performance enhancements to competing 20x CD-ROM drives, and rewritable CD-RW systems are being offered by an increasing number of companies. Flat LCD screens are also prominently displayed during the conference, many of which provide viewing improvements over standard CRT displays. Be's demonstration of its BeOS operating system impresses all those who witness it, offering enhancements in the areas of multitasking, multithreading and application insulation.
