Online shopping carts: good news for storefront designers
Article Abstract:
Web site designers can create a shopping cart for a small to medium-sized electronic commerce site using only the HTML code required to create a form. Shopping-cart programs run on a server that creates pages dynamically and tracks what a person wants to purchase. They should run on secure servers, but they need not be linked to the company's inventory databases. The company may prefer to receive orders via e-mail and create the more sophisticated links to their internal systems once online sales volume justifies the expenditure. Off-the-shelf shopping-cart programs can be modified for a specific site and installed on a secure server, or they may run off the vendor's own secure server. The shopping cart must support the pricing structure of the company's products, and the individual pages should be designed to fit into the site's overall look.
