Peeking behind the interface: wizards of multimedia production reveal all
Article Abstract:
Multimedia brings the consumer and the computer into an interactive relationship that is different from movies and MTV. Information can be gathered via non-linear paths that make multimedia technology an exceptional tool. Expert skills are necessary and the medium is expensive. As the technology advances the learning curve and price tag will diminish. Presently only service bureaus and video producers are able to cope with the limitations of computer technology. Apple, IBM and Microsoft have begun to develop industry standards for breakthrough multimedia technologies. Multimedia installations using different platforms are described in detail. A comprehensive directory is included for Mac/PC technology, CD-I technology and Video Toaster technology. Live images captured by the video camera are composited in real-time with background video from a laser disk, and recorded on VHS videotape.

Ad production made E-Z
Article Abstract:
Ad designers can save time and money by using specialized Mac-based software for single-page ad design. The software packages include features to optimize speed and facilitate repetitive tasks. Ad designers can elect to use general DTP packages, but ad-design software can help users create ads quickly. The tools can also be helpful in creating ads that have similar design elements and layouts from week to week. Three options include Multi-Ad Services' Multi-Ad Creator, AdCreation Toolkit from Vision's Edge and Metro Creative Graphics and Digital Technology International's AdSpeed. Features included in the applications range from specialized text editors to built-in trapping features. Other features include a time-saving option to resize a group of text.

A user interface parable
Article Abstract:
The design of a baseball bat, or of a computer input device such as a mouse, can face a legal challenge in court as the cause of a repetitive stress injury. The design itself may be completely neutral, as in the baseball bat which is symmetrical, and therefore the cause of the injury may be due then to improper use by the user. Finding a balance is essential between safe product design by the manufacturer with prudent, commonsense usage by the user.
