Photo opportunities
Article Abstract:
Digital photography is increasingly becoming the professional standard, resulting in many changes in relationships with prepress professionals and graphic designers. The speed of digital photography is one of its primary benefits; images are available onscreen within seconds, eliminating the need for reshoots and encouraging experimentation. Digital photography can be directly integrated with page layouts, but photographers are now responsible for more image editing and prepress production. Increasingly, photographers are taking on new duties or partnering with prepress professionals to offered integrated solutions. Digital techniques offer huge savings for photographers in time and costs of photographic supplies, but the higher cost of digital equipment can offset this savings. Prepress houses tend to have more capital to invest in equipment upgrades, and can often train or retrain personnel in photographic techniques.

Printing for an audience of one
Article Abstract:
Variable-data printing makes possible affordable, mass-produced custom color documents for applications such as direct-mail ads. Variable-data technologies have advanced far beyond the 'customer name here' approach to personalization, so that sophisticated documents that speak to an individual recipient are now possible and economical on a scale of hundreds or thousands. Variable-data printing functions in a way comparable to the mail-merge feature of a word processor. However, whereas mail merge lets users vary text entries, variable-data printing lets them change any document element, including colors, graphics, or even an entire document. Marketers believe the response rate to mass mailings, which has been less than 2%, can be substantially increased by relying on custom-designed ads.

Digital Bedrock
Article Abstract:
File servers provide users with access to the information they need to do their work. This data ranges from text files and layouts to graphics and photos. The server also restricts access to unauthorized users and handles such applications as graphics programs, workflow management and production management. Workflow automation and the increase of productivity are among the chief benefits of file server technology. The buyers guide compares the file-server offerings of five companies and offers information on the processors and operating systems employed, processor speeds, the amount of RAM, size of the hard drives, connectivity issues and network technologies supported.
