PicturePress 2.5.3: shrink your images to a more manageable size with this convenient JPEG compression utility
Article Abstract:
The $199 PicturePress 2.5.3 software package from Storm Technology is a useful Macintosh utility that employs the JPEG compression scheme for compressing large big-map files faster and with better quality than the similar utilities in Adobe Photoshop and Apple's QuickTime. JPEG enables the compression of bit-map files five to ten times better than conventional data compression schemes, albeit with a slight degradation of the image. PicturePress 2.5.3 features include the PicturePress application itself, a PictureDecomPress decompression utility for distribution with compressed files, a Frontier Runtime utility for automatically compression or decompression files placed in a specific folder, JPEG++ selective compression function and a version of PicturePress that can be plugged into PhotoShop, QuarkXPress and Fractal Design's ColorStudio. The plug-in utility also exports files in CMYK JPEG EPS format to page layout programs, which enables the decoding of PostScript files in a suitable printer. The software was rated four stars on a scale of five. A Windows version is available.

Adobe Photoshop 3.0
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems Inc's $895 Adobe Photoshop 3.0 remains one of the premier image processing products on the market. Among the enhancements to this version, which is designed to run native on the Power Mac platform, are an extensive Layers palette and two new additions to the toolbar. The layers feature accommodates 99 different layers, each of which can have several setting options, and it adds a significant dimension of control to the program. The wealth of layer options makes the lack of multiple undo functions a minor difficulty. The move and sponge tools on the improved toolbar add a subtle element of control and color effect. Although the dialog box requires a bit of acclimation, the filter dialog boxes have useful preview functions. The CD-ROM bundled with the package facilitates easy installation, and the interactive tutorials are excellent.

MC-P/Coco 2.2
Article Abstract:
Visu Technologies' MC-P/Coco 2.2 is an add-on application for correcting the color in such graphics applications as Adobe Photoshop or Fractal Design Painter. Coco provides precise controls and a faster way to achieve a desired color. Up to 16 colors can be adjusted before the changes take effect. A range of correction can be established for each color change. Color changes can be previewed selectively, enabling the user to undo any corrections. Coco's Multicolor Proofing (MC-P) simulates the prints of files containing more than four color plates. The software is easy to use. There are three Windows: a Preview window; the Coco window; and the Ink window, which is used to adjust and proof individual plates. The list price for MC-P/Coco 2.2 is $895.
