Proof positive
Article Abstract:
Proofreading is not eliminated in desktop publishing - in fact, slightly more proofing is required than in traditional printing. Preparing a page for Publish! provides an example. The article is complete down to the last keystroke when it is delivered to the copy desk. One of two copy editors reads it for consistency with house style and prepares a style sheet unique to this article. The article style sheet notes any unusual words, hyphenations, usages or spellings; the sheet accompanies the article as it changes hands to assure consistency. After the manuscript is formatted into galleys a second copy editor reads it again. It is cast into pages and proofed again. Each time a page is handled in any way - sent to the service bureau or reformatted to accommodate a graphics change, for example - it is proofed again. Unlike 'hard copy' which cannot change, a single keystroke can change or eliminate type.

Geneva Olverholser
Article Abstract:
Geneva Overholser, former editor of 'The Des Moines Register,' says that articles about her range from being excessively favorable to unfairly negative. She considers a coverage unfair when journalists fail to be subtle and view things as entirely black or white. She also raises concerns that reporters have developed a herd mentality regarding stories and that most have already completed their stories when they interview subjects.
