Publishers go with the flow at Print '97

Crossing the digital line
Article Abstract:
The Internet is fostering the digital revolution, but the Web does not replace traditional business strategies any more than television eliminated radio. The Web is an impressive marketing tool, but it ust be used in conjunction with print-based methods to provide a successful marketing campaign. Web efforts should be tied with such technologies as direct mail, space advertising and in-store promotions. The Web can also help attract and retain customers, improve customer service and lower the costs of obtaining customer information that will aid in marketing programs. Customer interaction is now the driving force behind marketing and the Web streamlines this interaction with the user as well as utilizing the customer database.

ILL communication
Article Abstract:
The print publishing part of the digital graphics industry is in turmoil as users hurry to replace traditional design and prepress techniques with digital arrangements. This is made more difficult because methods and technologies are rapidly evolving, and so far, no unified workflow standards have emerged. A creative director sums matters up, saying he knows he does not know what he is doing but is too busy to stop and learn. Even so, the things that can go wrong when using a computer to develop an electronic file are avoidable if basic guidelines are understood and observed. Above all, communication is important, and a manager should never be afraid to ask questions.
