QuarkXPress 4.0
Article Abstract:
Quark's $995 QuarkXPress 4.0 is a long-awaited upgrade of the powerful and popular but aging desktop publishing package that adds some useful features. It remains a best-of-breed product, but the improvements are only incremental and may soon be leapfrogged in the competing Adobe PageMaker. XPress still lacks aesthetic rag controls, and its justified type is less eye-pleasing than that produced by other products. Quark has finally added HiFI Color support, table of contents generation, Kodak color management, and the ability to wrap text on both sides of graphics within a frame, features already available in PageMaker. The best features of XPress 4.0 are its new graphics tools, which include Bezier-curve tools that can sometimes obviate the need to use a separate drawing package and the ability to convert text outlines to editable drawings. Other conveniences include character-based style sheets that can be associated with paragraph styles.

Font Gander Pro
Article Abstract:
Font Gander Pro, a $20 font management package published by Hugh Johnson, is highly recommended. The program lets a user display or print samples of any font on any mounted volume. Typefaces can be viewed in one of two displays: a six-line display, or a grid of an entire character set. Displays can be set up to 72 points, and a zoom feature shows them as large as 256 points. A new addition in the Pro version of Font Gander is the Gander Quill, a drawing application that generates custom layouts for type specimens. Other font-management programs use a word processor to accomplish this. Quill lets a user build pages with samples of as many as 99 typefaces. Layers on Gander Quill pages are dedicated to particular typefaces, with other layers being grayed out.

Autopage 4.0
Article Abstract:
KyTek Inc's Autopage 4.0 has strong features, but is somewhat overpriced at $7,500 for what it offers. The DTP program works with QuarkXPress but never quite integrates with that program and appears clumsy at times. Autopage does have exceptionally strong footnote controls, and enables users to use a variety of footnote schemes all on the same page. Autopage is not able to vertically justify when text leading is altered, cannot do text extractions, cannot do cross-references and insists that graphics appear at either the top or bottom as inline graphics. Though the program is solid overall, it is unlikely to get first time buyers of batch-pagination programs since there is competition in the market that does more for far more less money.
