Readers' choice awards: Publish readers pick their favorite PC and Mac products
Article Abstract:
A Publish magazine survey polling readers on their favorite desktop publishing-related software and hardware examined packages for Apple Macintosh and IBM PC-compatible microcomputers. The thirteen categories of software for each environment are page layout, word processing, type library, font editing, clip art, draw, paint, presentation graphics, multimedia, image editing, optical character reading, forms creation and utility packages. Hardware categories for each environment consist of laser printers, color printers, gray-scale or monochrome monitors, color monitors, desktop scanners, handheld scanners, input devices, video digitizing boards and removable storage devices. Favorite books for each microcomputer environment are also noted. Five products with over 70 percent of the votes in their respective categories include Adobe Systems Inc's Adobe Type Library, Microsoft Corp's Word and Caere Corp's OmniPage on the Macintosh, and Corel Systems Corp's CorelDRAW and Logictech Inc's ScanMan handheld scanners on the IBM PC or compatible microcomputers.

Turnkey systems offer publishers a one-stop solution and are a less-costly alternative to constructing a system out of separate components. A directory of Apple Macintosh-, IBM PC-compatible- and Unix-based desktop publishing turnkey systems and accessories is provided. The products are organized by category: cursor control/tracking devices, publishing and production management software, binding machines and special printer paper. The directory also includes the publisher's name and address and the product's list price.
