Revolutionary graphics: seventy years of Soviet poster art
Article Abstract:
Graphic arts in Russia underwent a revolution simultaneous to the 1917 political revolution. The Communists encouraged artists to incorporate technology and industrialization in their designs. In the 1930s, many graphic designers changed their styles to please the government, stopped working or were exiled. It was not until the late 1960s that Soviet designers began to initiate new forms of work, often inspired by their European counterparts. They were most influenced by designers in Poland and other Eastern European countries. Recent political changes in the Soviet Union in the early 1990s may lead to another revolution in design style.
