SmartMove 2.0
Article Abstract:
MEAC Software's SmartMove 2.0 is a batch-processing utility for converting large numbers of small image files among different formats and compressing them with the JPEG algorithm. Formats are defined according to sets of user-defined Tasks, each of which has a set of associated 'hot' folders SmartMove uses as the In, Out and Move folders for that task. Placing an image file in the In folder causes the task to automatically process it and place the resulting file in the Out folder, with the original image stored in the Move folder. Tasks can include changing file resolution, compressing files and converting them to different formats. MEAC claims SmartMove's version of JPEG compression is better than others in use today because it retains more detail, but many applications cannot open the resulting files, although they can be printed with PostScript. Supported file formats are also somewhat limited. SmartMove 2.0 is best suited for larger prepress shops.

Creator2 1.1
Article Abstract:
Multi-Ad Services' $995 Creator2 1.1 DTP software is an entirely redesigned version of Creator, which is already popular in the newspaper industry for creating display advertising. Creator2 exploits Apple's GX technology. Apple has abandoned QuickDraw GX, but the company is still working on GX graphics and typography, and many GX capabilities have been incorporated into Mac OS 8. To run Creator2, the GX Graphics extension, which comes included with Creator2 and with Mac OS 8, is required. Creator2 employs an object-oriented approach, treating all document elements as objects. The product includes many convenient features. For example, the Files Palette makes it easy for a user to construct a reference list of files and drag and drop them into a document from the palette.
