KPT Convolver 1.0
Article Abstract:
KTP Convolver, $199, from HSC Software creates a hospitable environment for image adjustment via the dialog box. KTP Convolver increases efficiency and provides an excellent user interface. It allows the user to apply numerous filter enhancements from the same location on the interface and provides 15 versions of a preview. Control over basic hue, color balance, brightness, saturation, contrast functions and three modes for filtering images combined with adjustment and setting capabilities increase user options significantly. Convolver Memory Dots are an effective approach to presets and enable the user to create filters because it allows effects to be saved. The lack of differentiation between dots can become confusing, however, when a number of effects are saved. One minor defect is Convolver's annoying reward system, which introduces new features as time passes.

ImageEditor 1.0
Article Abstract:
PictureWorks Technology Inc's $249 ImageEditor is designed to enable users to effect image-editing adjustments of PhotoShop files imported into QuarkXPress 3.0. The desktop publishing extension can work with PICT, EPS, TIFF, and Desktop Color Separation (DCS) files. Images can be modified and enhanced with ten PhotoShop-like tools and a number of paint and editing tools. In addition to cropping, floating and feathering images, conversion between four color modes is possible. Although the extension does not enable the application of filters, it does offer powerful painting and editing capabilities. One drawback is that in order to work with large images, the XPress memory allocation must be enhanced. Some users may also find the price steep for a utility, but power users of XPress will find it a productivity-enhancing tool.

XPert Tools
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of A Lowly Apprentice Production's $129 XPert Tools for Macintosh reveals that the Quark XTension bundle offers 15 XTensions at a great price, although some are more useful than others. Overall five of the 15 add-ons in the package are outstanding for most users and three will appeal to high-end users, but seven of the XTensions are simply filler. The most appealing XTensions in XPert Tools are all practical tools, and XPert Print is the best. It eliminates the hassle of manual tiling when printing partial pages. The XTension utilizes simple addition to the basic XPress toolbar, enabling users to double-check selections. It then prints or saves it as an EPS file. Other attractive XTensions include XPert Scale and XPert Color.
