The 1993 Pritzker Architecture Prize
Article Abstract:
Fumihiko Maki received the 1993 Pritzker Architecture Prize, worth $100,000, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The Hyatt Foundation established the prize in 1979 and modelled it after the Nobel Prizes. The award was presented to Maki by Czechoslovakian Pres Vaclav Havel at the Prague Castle. Maki studied with Walter Gropius and Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen while at Harvard University and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. After 22 years of study and work in the US, he returned to Japan where he still lives and works. He has designed buildings in the US, Japan, South America, Europe and Malaysia.

Off the page and into the environment: Sussman/Prejza & Company
Article Abstract:
Deborah Sussman began her design firm in 1968 and was joined in 1972 by her husband, architect Paul Prejza. The firm designed an elaborate street sign system for Walt Disney World, and the results so impressed Walt Disney CEO Michael Eisner that Sussman-Prejza was commissioned to design at EuroDisneyland. The company created the ambience for the 1984 Olympics and is currently involved in renovating Manhattan's Times Square. Sussman was a Fulbright scholar who worked in Paris and Milan after completing college and design school.

The 1991 Pritzker Architecture Prize
Article Abstract:
Architect Robert Venturi's contributions and achievements to architecture has won him the $100,000 Pritzker Architecture Award. His 1966 publication, 'Complexity and Contradiction,' and his building designs helped change 20th century architecture by redefining Modernism. Venturi is guided by past architectural styles and says that architects should 'design from the inside out and the outside in.'
