The Brazilian book publishing industry and its current challenges
Article Abstract:
The Brazilian book industry shows great future potential, however, it is facing a serious crisis at the moment with a loss of 33.82% since 2000. In order to make the potential of the market a reality, Brazil has to diminish its functional illiteracy rate and develop the population's reading habits and the main challenge of the Brazilian publishing industry is to improve and increase the demand of books in the country, transforming a potential market in a real one.

From obscurity to bestseller: Examining the impact of Oprah's book club selections
Article Abstract:
Statistical techniques are used to quantify the 'Oprah effect' on the sales of retail books, which Oprah Winfrey endorsed and estimated that each Oprah pick generated about $80 million in new sales for retail bookstores. Evidence also suggested that the book club waned slightly in popularity over its life, something that may have contributed to the restructuring of the club after April 2002.
