The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art breaks new ground by mounting an exhibition of work by four Bay Area designers: Cronan, Manwaring, Reis and Vanderbyl (Michael Cronan, Michael Manwaring, Gerald Reis and Michael Vanderbyl)

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is having its first ever graphic arts exhibit. The exhibit, called 'California Graphic Designers,' features Bay Area artists Michael Cronan, Michael Manwaring, Gerald Reis and Michael Vanderbyl. The exhibition runs from December 17, 1992, through February 7, 1993. The San Francisco Museum is one of only four US museums that have graphic design departments. In 1995, the San Francisco Museum will open a new gallery that will permanently house design exhibitions.

Designers advocate! Michael Vanderbyl

San Francisco graphic artist Michael Vanderbyl teaches design, runs his own firm and has designed showrooms, posters and outdoor sculptures for companies around the US. Vanderbyl is the dean of the school of design at the California College of Arts and Crafts. He has designed furniture and displays for Bernhardt Furniture and Esprit. Vanderbyl feels that professional designers are equal to non-commission artists. However, he is critical of much contemporary design work.

Bruce Mau: Book Maker

Bruce Mau is an Canadian-born book designer who is currently the subject of an exhibit at Bordeaux's Arc en Reve Centre D'Architecture. His work on the book "S, M, L, XL" cemented his reputation as a graphic designer. Mau's designs are described as being bold and cinematic. His company, Bruce Mau Design, is now branching out into the fields of feature film graphics and retail display.
