The digital gets physical; digital artists go beyond simply printing their work to manipulating the print itself
Article Abstract:
Five digital artists participated in a print manipulation workshop in San Francisco sponsored by the Urban Digital Color (UDC) service bureau. The results of the workshop were included in a month-long exhibit. The artists, Helen Golden, Bonny Lhotka, Dorothy Simpson Krause, Judith Moncrieff and Karin Schminke, call their group Unique Editions. They primarily rely on Adobe Photoshop and Fractal Design Painter, although Fauve Xres and Pixel Resources' PixelPaint Pro are also employed by some of the artists. A good printer is essential when manipulating prints, so the group paid UDC a flat fee for the use of its Iris printer. Access to the printer fostered creativity and opened new avenues for exploration. Progress was also faster because of the proximity of the printer. The Unique Editions group plans to meet every six months to continue their collaborative process.

How good can your spelling bee?
Article Abstract:
Batteries Included's $49.95 Thunder, Working Software's $74.95 Spellswell, and Champion Software's $39.95 Spelling Champion are three stand alone spelling verification programs for the Mac that work with any word processor application. Thunder is a desk accessory that lets users check words interactively as they type as well as after a document is completed. Thunder has a small 50,000 word dictionary; however, it works where other spell checkers do not - in page layout programs. Spellswell works separate from word processors and opens documents by itself and has a 93,000 word dictionary Separate medical and legal dictionaries are available for $99.95. Spellswell works slowly. Spelling Champion works faster and has a 125,000 word dictionary. Of the three programs, Champion is the best with its large dictionary and quick-fix time. Thunder is a close second.

Gradient school
Article Abstract:
Gradient tools can be manipulated to yield colorful backgrounds and textures. Among the various options, Adobe Photoshop 4.0 is probably more beneficial. It fits each gradient within the length of the line drawn by the user, then expands to the edge of the window with the pigment of the gradient. Modifying the line's colors, direction and length enables an endless array of breathtaking effects. The radial gradient option enables the creation of objects that resemble amoebas under a microscope. Users seeking a subtle wash of color should look at Corel Photo-Paint. Macromedia XRes delivers serrated, cubist patterns.
