The latest Word
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Word 3.0 ($395) is not as flexible as a true page-makeup program, but Word is sufficient for many documents that contain mostly text, such as legal documents, business reports, technical documents, and books; the program works less well for documents that contain mostly graphics. There are improvements over previous versions, notably in speed of scrolling, saving files, and printing. New features include: a spelling checker; automatic hyphenation; integrated outliner; automatic generation of indexes and tables of contents; and a porting function. However, the program is described as 'complex', requiring time and patience to learn; moreover, the program is large, requiring 332Kbytes of disk space. The software, which needs 512Kbytes and one 800Kbyte or two 400Kbyte disk drives, is carefully described; its strengths, its weaknesses, and its possible uses are discussed. Microsoft 3.0 is not copy protected.

The art of multimedia
Article Abstract:
George Coates, director of George Coates Performance Works, founds Science Meets Arts Society (SMARTS), a group aiming to promote theatrical experimentation in the Silicon Valley. Coates' latest show, 'Invisible Site,' incorporates computer animation and 3D visuals produced by programmers from Silicon Graphics Inc (SGI), NASA Ames and Apple. 'Invisible Site' is the pilot project for collaborative works of this kind. The effort is led by Creon Levitt of NASA Ames. SGI rewrites its software to enable the theater participants to have access to different applications within seven seconds to simulate cue changing. Coates says multimedia technology may stir another cultural revolution similar to what the transistor radio created in the 1960s, by enabling the stage to be used as the new box offering an alternate world.
