The price of commitment; IBM Interleaf Publisher
Article Abstract:
The $2,495 IBM Interleaf Publisher is a local area network (LAN) publishing program designed to meet the demands of the constant revision process in technical documentation. The Interleaf Publisher requires 5 megabytes of RAM and an 80386-based computer with PostScript printing devices and a Microsoft compatible mouse. Publisher integrates graphics and editing functions into one program, limiting the ability to import files. Property sheets corresponding to text and graphics allow the user to make changes at any time, while Interleaf automatically updates all numbered items including figures and chapter headings across the files. A table of contents and index are automatically generated, as are headers and footers, making Interleaf ideal for long documents. Some inadequacies are found in word spacing, letter spacing, kerning, hyphenating, and font capabilities that should be considered.

Full, but not right; FullWrite Professional
Article Abstract:
Fullwrite professional is among the first of a new generation of word processing programs with integrated graphics. Although the program has strong word processing capabilities, its graphics are not up to complex design standards. There is no tutorial for users and documentation is poor. Among the word processing features is a powerful outline processor that generates an outline from section headings. Notes maintain contents of chapters, footnotes, indexes and endnotes. Charts and 'see' references can be linked automatically. Search and Replace works not only with text, but with typefaces. Global style changes work only in identical paragraphs. While one megabyte of RAM is suggested by the developer, a minimum of 2.5 Mbytes of RAM is needed to make FullWrite functional. The program has a list price of $395 and runs on the Macintosh Plus with a hard disk.
