Tuned-up tables: Table Tools (Software Review) (REVIEW Portfolio) (evaluation)
Article Abstract:
Mansfield Systems' $395 Table Tools Package can be used to enhance tables with its features for grouping cells, incorporating data into graphics and exporting tables as PICT files to a page layout program. A table is created according to its final dimensions and is constructed by setting up a flexible grid. Table Tools' special Group feature enables the merging of several cells into larger ones that hold clip art, pie charts and Comments text. No other program allows the mixing of cell sizes in this way. The Shuttle feature allows corrections or updated information to be entered into a Table Tools graph. The program has good text-handling capabilities, but lacks automatic hyphenation. Style sheets can be assigned to individual cells. Future upgrades will include the ability to rotate text and graphics in cells and allow you to scale exported tables. Table Tools 1.1 is given the highest recommendation.

Jack of all trades
Article Abstract:
Publish It, a $395 desktop publishing software package from Timeworks Inc, rates as exceptional and is highly recommended. Publish It is the closest that any Apple Macintosh program comes to being an all-in-one desktop publishing package. Publish It's features include the ability to rotate type, to wrap text around oddly shaped graphics, to create characters that are filled with a pattern and it includes 70 ready-made templates. Publish It also has strong graphics capabilities, with painting and drawing tools and the ability to turn graphics into bit-mapped images for modification. On the downside Publish It does not allow text to flow from page to page, instead requiring users to link text frames. Options such as hyphenation controls, optimum word spacing, widow and orphan control and a way to make dropped initial caps are also missing.

Trying harder: Ready Set Go 4.5
Article Abstract:
Letraset USA's $495 page layout program for the Macintosh, Ready Set Go 4.5, is highly recommended and compares evenly with Quark Xpress and Aldus Pagemaker. The new version's typographical improvements include letterspacing, tracking and kerning adjustments to one thousandth of an em space. Gray-scale images can be displayed, and a library of Pantone Matching System colors is included for adding spot color. One-hundredth-of-a-point leading is available, but a Vertical Justification feature works only within a single text block. Other features include good hyphenation control with an exception dictionary, character sizes in hundredth-of-a-point increments, and a case conversion feature. The program requires 1Mbyte of RAM and one floppy drive.
