Two brilliant ideas, or two megaflops?
Article Abstract:
The United Parcel Service's Document Exchange service will let people send electronic files over the Internet, track their progress, insure the files, and receive confirmation from Deloitte and Touche that the file was received. The service is expected to cost less than the standard overnight letter charge of $9, and it offers two levels of security: UPS Dossier uses NetDox' double-encryption process, and UPS OnLine Courier uses technology from Tumbleweed Software. It is uncertain whether people will be willing to spend for what is in essence secure e-mail. Imagek's Electronic Film System (EFS-1) CCD digital-capture device is about the size of a 35mm film canister and uses a 1.3-megapixel array to convert film cameras into digital cameras. The EFS-1 can hold 30 24-bit, 1,280-by-1,024-pixel images that can be downloaded to a PC through a PCMCIA card. The device will cost less than $1,000 when it is released in the summer of 1998, and while it is uncertain that the concept will click, so to speak, it does have potential.

Inside report
Article Abstract:
Demand for digital cameras is increasing in the electronic publishing industry. In a recent survey, 30% of Publish readers reported they were 'somewhat likely' to purchase a digital camera in the next year, and a further 30% said such a purchase was highly probable. This significantly exceeds the percentage of readers intending to purchase a traditional film-based camera. Overall image quality was cited as the most critical factor in digital camera purchase decisions. Other concerns, in order, included technical support and bundled software. Low price is not a primary concern of readers, who expressed greater interest in features that will enhance their productivity. Brand name is also low on the list of major considerations. Leading applications for digital cameras include brochures, newsletters, presentations and Web pages.

Blinded by the light: your color judgement may be tainted by office color and lighting conditions
Article Abstract:
Color-management software is not as effective as it could be if it is used in an office that has inadequate lighting and viewing conditions. Several factors can affect how color is perceived, such as the temperature of overhead lights and the color of clothing. A color viewing booth that complies with ANSI Standard PH2.30, titled Viewing Conditions: Graphic Arts and Photographic Color Transparencies, Prints and Photomechanical Reproductions can greatly aid in matching the conditions at the printer. The viewing booths are available in several sizes and cost from $500 up to $5,000. If a viewing booth is not possible, an office can be more color-friendly by setting a consistent point in the temperature and intensity of the primary lighting. Color viewing temperature, according to ANSI standard, should be 5,000 kelvin.
