J.C. Penney is implementing a multi-channel business strategy called '3-tailing,' which combines the company's retail, catalog and e-commerce operations. So far, the strategy seems to be working, with Web sales increasing from $15 million in 1998 to $102 million in 1999, and jumping to $294 million in 2000. According to Paul Pappajohn, president of J.C. Penney's e-commerce division, customers who shop all three channels spen much more than single-channel shoppers.
