Will Hearst: shaking up San Francisco
Article Abstract:
William Randolph Hearst III, publisher of the San Francisco Examiner, uses the Apple Macintosh and IBM PCs to automate production at the paper. The Macintosh is used for 100 percent of the news; the IBM PC is used for accounting. A Macintosh system that enables the layout, graphics and type for whole pages is in the prototype phase at the Examiner. Photographs are handled manually by scanning color photos electronically. Digital still cameras have a resolution that is too low for use in the daily professional publication. The paper may skip digital still camera technology completely and move on to Hi-8 video. After the 1989 earthquake the paper had to rely on power from a backup generator, and by running an extension power cord to a bank building across the street that had a backup power supply. The paper now has their own backup generator for electricity. The Examiner how has an in-house on-line news service, however this may never completely replace getting the news on paper because people like to browse and discover information.

Fast fax publishing: conquering the world with phone and fax
Article Abstract:
Facsimile is a worldwide phenomenon, as demonstrated by use of the technology by Chinese students during the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, and by how the Los Angeles Times was able to fax an eight-page news digest that included comics and sports to American troops in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1991. International time zone barriers can be surmounted using fax technology. Fax publishing is used domestically by a number of magazines and newspapers for fast distribution of easy to read documents. Some customers are more interested in gathering information than products, and some publishers are seeking new ways to sell. Dataquest predicts that by 1995 there will be over 13 million fax machines in use in the US. Leading fax publications are adaptations of publications currently in print on paper media. The Hartford Courant Fax Paper consists of abstracts of the next day's news, and is delivered on the desk, over the phone lines, at 4:30 p.m. The power of telecommunications is combined with the familiarity of print.

Making headlines
Article Abstract:
Microcomputers are being incorporated into the editorial, art, and classified advertising departments of newspapers. The Electronic Publisher (EP) is a company that advises newspapers on using microcomputers; EP also sells systems. So far, EP has established Macintosh-based arrangements at 75 newspapers. Microcomputer uses in the newspaper industry are discussed, and applications at specific newspapers are described. Desktop publishing is rapidly becoming essential in the industry. A sidebar describes a graphics network that has been established by the Knight-Ridder newspaper chain; artwork is created on Macintoshes and can be called up online, using a network called Press Link.
