Workflow that works
Article Abstract:
An efficient production workflow is essential for ensuring good management and timely publication in the publishing industry. An outside consultant can often be the best choice for reorganizing workflow. Improving a publication's workflow should begin with the assemblage of a team representing all departments and workgroups to voice the nature of each individual's work and determine what changes are sought. Next, a diagram of the existing workflow pattern should be drawn and most importantly, reviewed for bottlenecks, redundancies, non-sequential work and heavy tracking, checking and handing-off. With the tools of the chart and personnel feedback, the assisting manager and consultant can draft a new workflow chart and explanation. This new chart should be tested with a pilot group or project with continual feedback from the staff. It is important to remain flexible and open to ideas and criticism. Workflow management software such as Lotus Notes can be a helpful tool for the involved process of evaluating, designing and implementing efficient workflow.
