Article Abstract:
The introduction of the 240 million pounds sterling Supertram network into Sheffield, England, was seen by some as a failure whilst others consider it to be an innovative scheme. The local authorities in Sheffield have been criticised for spending unwisely on some development projects, yet the Meadowhall shopping area and the city's sports facilities have encouraged a great number of visitors. The retail sector is beginning to grow although rents remain low. Plans to develop an area around the town hall seem likely to go ahead despite the predicted yearly costs of 500,000 pounds sterling.

Article Abstract:
Doncaster, England, is undergoing a period of growth in the mid-1990s in contrast to the fall in the economy following the closure of the coal and steel industries in the 1980s. Land at the former site of RAF Finningley will either be used for an international airport or for the prison service. The Priory Walk area has been developed into a retail and leisure centre and Lakeside park will be the location of a new call centre for BT. Unemployment in the area has fallen from 40% at the end of the 1980s to 11% by 1997.
