Against the odds
Article Abstract:
City centre retailing in Bristol, England, has fared better than expected against competition from the major out-of-town retail development which opened in Mar 1999. Research suggests that city centre trade dropped by only 12-18% following the development, prime properties in the city centre are continuing to attract high rents, and Bristol City Council is considering proposals for two city centre developments. Land Securities wants to develop a retail area with two major stores over part of Bristol's ringroad, and the St Mary le Port proposal encompasses a hotel, leisure and retail development.
