Bear's necessities of life: globe-trotting engineer turned property developer Mike Bear is putting down roots in the City
Article Abstract:
Mike Bear is chief executive of Spitalfields Development Group (SDG) and was brought in by Peter Beckwith to handle land surrounding the then derelict Spitalfields market. At the time pressure groups had got the scheme called in and Bear worked with the local community to turn the situation around. He assisted Bethnal Green in its successful bid for City Challenge status and is heading Tower Hamlets' bid for SRB funding. He has worked overseas and believes that mainland Europe has a more organised planning system, although there are few trained chartered surveyors compared to the UK.

Fresh air... little space
Article Abstract:
Carlisle's office accommodation is in short supply because properties are not being upgraded to suit changing requirements. Average rents of 75 pounds sterling per square meter are not enough to convert older buildings into modern facilities. The demand for retail accommodation is high, however, and top level rents are priced at 1,076 pounds sterling per square meter. Penrith is becoming popular with the leisure industry. Major breweries such as Bass are considering the area.

Quiet but not boring
Article Abstract:
Property development in the town of Brentwood has been limited compared with other parts of Essex, especially as the town is surrounded by green belt. The retail market has been badly affected by the opening of the Lakeside development in Thurrock, but is now showing signs of a modest recovery. In the industrial sector, there has been steady interest in Childerditch Industrial Park.
