Article Abstract:
The real estate industry's traditional role in society is increasingly being threatened by the rise of e-commerce, which is set to drastically cut demand for retail and town-centre office space. Even if overall demand is not reduced, different types of buildings will be required, making many existing buildings obsolete, while the broking functions of financial and property firms will be cut and many jobs could be lost. However, the US experience shows that, on balance, e-commerce could increase demand for industrial space.

Predicting the online future
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the ways in which retail property will be affected by rising e-commerce are discussed. The forecasts for online sales vary considerably but it is expected that they could rise from 3.5% in 2004 to 12.5% in 2009.
