Pension plan trustees can easily stay in compliance with the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). Following ERISA guidelines avoids negative legal consequences, but also improves investment returns. Trustees must ensure that the investment manager to complies with all ERISA laws and regulations, creates documents describing the investment management's relationship with the plan, and retains records evidencing prudent investment decisions.
