Conglomerating: looking for new worlds to conquer
Article Abstract:
Several issues related to real estate investment trust (REIT) conglomeration are discussed. REITs that target companies whose price-earnings multiples are low could be making the same mistake that early conglomerates did, according to New Plan Realty Trust chief Arnold Laubich. He explained that REITs may not be well equipped to manage companies whose business lines fall outside of REITs' traditional business line.

Crescent Real Estate Equities Ltd began seeking long term alliances after being constrained by the traditional roles filled by real estate investment trusts (REITs). Simple alliances and a joint venture between a REIT and a pension fund are two forms of alliances that are possible. However, REITs must consider tax implications and the reaction of rating agencies when they consider these forms of alliances.
