There are mixed views about the likely future of distribution to rural areas in the UK. There has been falling consumer demand from rural areas over recent years, but there are now indications that shops in rural areas are being more extensively used. However, distributors are still having to re-evaluate their activities, particularly in remote parts of the UK such as rural Wales and Scotland. They must constantly monitor the cost of distribution, especially as duty and fuel costs rise.

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of companies are considering the rail option, especially for long-haul and international freight movements. New road-rail terminals aim to change attitudes towards mixed-use transportation by cutting costs and reducing hassle. Hams Hall Channel Tunnel Rail Freight Terminal on the outskirts of Birmingham and Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal in Northmaptonshire are two such terminals.
