There is a shortage of low cost housing throughout the country and homeless families are often having to rely on the private rented sector. Major housebuilders are increasingly working alongside local authorities, housing associations and development corporations to build affordable housing, and there are also now specialist affordable housebuilders. The DOE is looking at ways of increasing affordable housing through the planning system, making more land available in the system for affordable housing.

Price rises flout growth slowdown

The seasonally adjusted 37% rise in the price of housing in England and Wales continues to show an upward trend in spite of slower economic growth. The Council of Mortgage Lenders reports that buyer interest remains high.
