Developers get coal comfort
Article Abstract:
Cap Gemini is to make the largest implementation so far in the UK of a geographical information system as it designs, builds and operates a new Mining Reports and Surface Damage System for the Coal Authority. The project, which is worth around 11 million pounds sterling, will bring a number of significant advantages to the Coal Authority, which currently relies on out-of-date mining reports and surface damage systems to store its computerised mining data. A key benefit will be cutting the risk of a system failure making it impossible for the authority to supply coal mining data.

Making the upgrade
Article Abstract:
It is worth considering whether the lifespan of an existing PC could be extended with upgrades, rather than purchasing a completely new computer. It is possible to fit a new processor cheaply and easily, and the user should notice a significant improvement for applications that were previously slow. It is also worth considering adding memory, but before doing so it is important to check how much memory the system will take. Attention should also be given to the speed of the single inline memory module and whether parity or non-parity single inline memory modules are used.
