Telecommuting can lead to more flexible working practices which reduces company costs and also has implications for the environment by helping to reduce traffic congestion. It is estimated a London company could reduced its costs by around 2 million pounds sterling if 100 workers changed to telecommuting. Some reports suggest that teleworking is not increasing rapidly because employees find it an unsatisfactory method of working as they miss social contact and feel their work is not valued. It is predicted that some 3 million UK office workers could work part-time from their homes.

Increased activity in office space rentals in Derby town-centre has helped reduce the amount of vacant square footage. Recent deals involve Heritage Gate, Castle Park, St Peter's House, and Wesley House; while larger second-hand space is also going well. The city lacks factory and warehouse space of up to 10,000 sq ft. The lack of industrial land is expected to be met by the development of Derby Pride, a 25 acre site set to go on sale in April 1995.
