Eastern England
Article Abstract:
Eastern England has not had the economic problems which other UK regions have suffered. The economic base is settled and diverse, and there is a good proportion of hi-tech and medium sized businesses. However it does mean that there are few openings for grant assistance in the area. The region sees a need to attact more inward investment and is setting up an inward investment agency. Communications links have not always been good, but they are improving. Twenty-three road improvement schemes, and the development of European rail links, are pending.

North West
Article Abstract:
The North West region of England has a workforce of 2.9 million but employment growth is below the national rate. A range of financial incentives is available. US electronics company Phototronics Inc. will receive a 3 million pounds sterling financial package for its 47 million pounds sterling investment in Manchester. The North West and its main industrial centres of Manchester and Merseyside have good communication links via the dense motorway network in the area, the major international airport in Manchester and the Liverpool seaport.

Yorkshire and Humberside
Article Abstract:
The Yorkshire and Humberside region of northern England has been attracting foreign investment since the 1930s and development agencies, throughout the area, continue this work. The Sheffield Development Corporation has created, in a previously derelict area, over 2 million square feet of industrial and office space and a new airport. The Enterprise Zone status of the Dearne Valley has succeeded in attracting a range of Korean investment. The city council of Leeds is working towards establishing the city as a major financial centre.
