Article Abstract:
The UK Treasure Act 1996, which will come into effect on Sep 24, 1997, introduces a wider definition of treasury than the concept of treasure trove contained in the old common law. Finds of potential treasure must be reported to the coroner within 14 days, and the coroner must attempt to inform landowners and occupiers of any reported finds of treasure. There is no provision against rewards being paid to trespassers, but guidelines on the payment of rewards are contained in a code of practice.
