The five counties which make up the East Midlands region of England have a total workforce of over 2 million, and 27% of this number are employed in manufacturing. The clothing, textile and shoe-making industries continue to be significant employers, but these industries are declining. Unemployment throughout the region is slightly below the national average at 7.4%. Inward investment is important in the area's economy with 12 foreign companies investing heavily in the East Midlands in 1995-96. The area's location in the centre of the country and its motorway network is a major attraction.

Employment in manufacturing is important in the economy of the West Midlands region of England, with 36% of male employment in this sector. The automobile industry is particularly important and, after a number of major investment deals, this looks set to continue. Foreign investment in the West Midlands in 1995 totalled 840 million pounds sterling, and 22% of this came from the automobile industry. A major attraction of the area is its location at the centre of the country's motorway network.
