Fee earners see payment by results

The 1999 Estates Gazette/Reuter Simpkin Salaries and Benefits Survey of surveyors, in the UK, found the average salary had risen by about 3,000 pounds sterling to 36,400 pounds sterling annually. There were some indications younger surveyors were given higher wage increases due to fewer graduates becoming available. Average wages for surveyors working in Scotland fell during whilst in East Anglia they showed a marked increase. More than 50% of surveyors, involved with investment work, earned more than 40,000 pounds sterling. Some 955 respondents took part in the study.

The deterioration in employment prospects means that job security is now more important than salary for those in the UK surveying profession, according to the 1996 Estates Gazette/Reuter Simkin Salary and Benefits Survey. Of those surveyed, around 54% anticipate leaving their firm within two years: 64% of respondents believe that better career prospects will be the reason behind a job change, while 23% believe redundancy is the most likely reason. The average surveyor's salary rose by 1.6% to 30,800 pounds sterling in 1995 vs 1994.
