Digging beneath the surface

Article Abstract:

It is unclear if the new landfill tax will fulfill in its objectives of ensuring waste disposal is managed correctly and waste production is reduced. The landfill tax was introduced into the UK on Oct. 1, 1996. It is planned that through recycling schemes and reuse of waste products the amount produced can be cut by around 50% by the year 2010. There is some evidence that inert wastes are not being taken to disposal sites in order to avoid the imposition of the landfill tax. The government hopes to raise around 500 million pounds sterling from the new tax.

Economical with the truth

Article Abstract:

There are three different types of misrepresentation according to the UK Misrepresentation Act 1997 and in all three categories the victim may be awarded damages by the courts. A mis-statement must be negligent to incur a legal penalty. A tenant is advised to ensure that any oral promises from the landlord are followed up in a written contract to avoid conflict in the future. The difference between a mis-statement and misrepresentation is very slight, both mean that something is presented to someone which is not true.
