Article Abstract:
Studies into the possibility of traffic congestion caused by new shopping developments are always carried out in the UK, prior to construction. Yet problems with traffic often occurs, once the centres are in operation. Research into the level of traffic often fails to predict accurately the popularity of a new centre. Developments which mix commercial and industrial outlets on one site must arrange adequate parking facilities rather than relying on parking on surrounding roads. Some industry experts suggest that people using the developments soon learn to use routes which are less busy.

The price of prosperity
Article Abstract:
The opening of The Mall has significantly boosted the popularity of Prudential's Cribbs Causeway regional shopping centre at junction 17 of the M5. However, the scheme has led to a large rise in traffic in the area, and this is having a negative impact on industrial and distribution operations. It will now become increasingly difficult for Cribbs Causeway to compete as a distribution centre in terms of land cost and easy access to the M5. Other developments in the area include the first speculative phase of distribution buildings by Burford Holdings at the 182.9 ha Cabot Park.

The city of Bristol, England, has a range of potential development sites within easy reach of its centre. Key areas are the Temple Quay and Harbourside areas. Building taking place on the 23.7 acre Temple Quay site includes infrastructure development and a headquarters building for the Bristol & West Building Society. This area looks set to be an office district whilst the Harbourside area is becoming a leisure district. Crest Nicholson is preparing to resubmit plans for the development of 14.8 acre section of Harbourside to include a cinema, casino and fitness centre.
