Land of the giants
Article Abstract:
The decline in the number of new out of town retail developments has led to a general increase in rents and an even higher rental growth in some of the major shopping centres. Only a limited amount of renovation to town shopping centres has gone ahead. The number of new out of town retail developments has declined due to changes in consumer shopping patterns, less money to fund new development and the UK government's policy restricting planning on new developments outside town centres. It is forecasted out of town development will almost stop completely during the next few years.

How are the mighty fallen
Article Abstract:
Retail warehouse parks will continue to be developed in the United Kingdom during 1996, in spite of the Government restrictions on out-of-town shopping development schemes. Approximately 1.4 million square metres of development already has planning permission, and is waiting to be carried out. Town centre retail activity is being threatened by these new shopping patterns, and some think that urgent action is needed if traditional British town centres are to be saved.
