Mortgage lenders call for government help
Article Abstract:
UK mortgage lenders face a difficult market in 1995, and reduction sin interest rates have not increased demand for mortgages. Potential buyers are influenced by likely changes in the price of what they buy, in addition to interest rates, their future income and government subsidies. Turnover in the market has fallen to between 8% and 9% of homes from 12% during the 1980s when interest rates were higher. The government has reduced subsidies through the tax and social security system, and there are calls for this policy to be reversed.
