Paving the way
Article Abstract:
The market for retail units in Glasgow, Scotland, is centered around the new Buchanan Galleries, with retailers which are not moving into the centre finding space nearby. Some redevelopment of old buildings is taking place, with the refurbishment of the Bremners department store and the conversion of the Stock Exchange into a large shopping outlet. Towns outside Glasgow have been affected by the growth of the shopping facilities in the city but shopping centres at East Kilbride are trading well. Rents in Glasgow are high, with space in Argyle Street costing 200 pounds sterling per sq ft.

Hard to score hat trick
Article Abstract:
The development of a 405,000 sq ft retail centre in Dundee, Scotland, is not likely to affect the 270,000 sq ft Wellgate Centre which operates nearby. Rents for Wellgate are 90 pounds sterling per sq ft for zone A space. Lend Lease have cut their rents to 110 pounds sterling per sq ft for the new Overgate Centre. The local authorities in Aberdeen, Scotland, have made it difficult for retail developers to obtain planning permission. The council has finally agreed to the Scotoil Group's plans for 206,000 sq ft of space. The 535,000 sq ft scheme for Guild Street is also likely to go ahead.

Sales pitch
Article Abstract:
The west coast town of Ayr, Scotland, is experiencing an upturn in retail trade, with rents predicted to reach 67.50 pounds sterling for a prime area on the High Street. The town centre in Dumfries, South West Scotland, is fairly buoyant whilst on the outskirts of town two retail developments under construction. The rents for the central retail sites, in Kilmarnock, are 57.50 pounds sterling per sq ft. Some agents suggest the area may suffer from oversupply when new retail space in King Street is completed. Two new multiplexes are also planned for the outskirts of Kilmarnock.
