Recycle and prosper
Article Abstract:
New waste disposal legislation is likely to increase costs for industry, in the UK. The European Union Landfill Directive 1998 obliges the UK to cut the amount of biodegradable waste currently placed in landfill sites to 35% by 2020. Some waste products will no longer be permitted in landfill sites, such as explosive or flammable wastes. A mixture of non-hazardous and hazardous materials will not be allowed in the same landfill. The management of waste has been included in the Draft Planning Policy Guidance Note 10. It acknowledges waste management needs to be planned on a regional basis.

Utilities and land rights
Article Abstract:
Utility companies in the UK benefit from a range of statutory rights of access on to private land for the purpose of laying service infrastructure such as cables. Under the Pipe-lines Act 1962, a private pipeline promoter is able to obtain a Compulsory Rights Order allowing it to lay a pipeline and undertake ancillary works on private land. Section 159 of the Water Industry Act 1991 allows a water or sewerage undertaker to lay a pipe below or above ground, as well as giving rights of access. In all cases, compensation is payable for land or rights acquired.
