There are 16 separate islands making up the Orkney islands in the North of Scotland, with a population of 20,000 people in 1998. Oil, farming and fishing are the island's main source of income, although growth in the tourist industry is set to contribute to the island's economy through employment and development. The fishing industry of the Shetland Islands employs up to 2,000 people and was worth 85 million pounds sterling in 1998.
