Article Abstract:
Some 53% of respondents working in the leisure and retail industries felt that South West England and South Wales do not have a sufficient number of leisure outlets, in contrast to only 16% wanting more retail stores. Around 80% of those questioned felt that consumers were likely to increase the amount they were spending between Sept 1997-Sept 1998. Most respondents were supportive of the introduction of closed circuit television to help stop crime. Some 75 head offices of leisure operators and retail stores located in the South West and South Wales were questioned in Sept 1997.

Some 81% of retailers and leisure facility operators agreed that consumer spending would increase between Jul 1997-Jul 1998. One hundred head offices of leisure and retail outlets in the North West of England were questioned in Jul 1997. Only 20% of retailers felt there were not enough outlets in the in the region, whilst 38% felt there were too many shops. Some 68% of respondents felt that the local authorities did not do enough to promote either leisure or retail facilities in the area.
