SAVE presses for rethink on redundant asylums
Article Abstract:
The UK has many Victorian mental asylum buildings which are now in danger as care in the community policies become more widespread, according to a report from SAVE. There were 121 large mental hospitals operating in 1986, but 98 of these will have closed by 2000. It is very important to carefully consider the future of these buildings, many of which have landscaped surroundings. The government should particularly look at offering them at a reasonable price to benevolent organisations.

Thames Gateway set for increased development

A recently released planning framework report gives details of plans for the development of the Thames Gateway area, which reaches from London's Docklands to Tilbury in Essex and the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. It particularly focuses on the need to encourage development of previously used sites and to add new transport links. Environmental factors must also be taken into consideration.

Ombudsman probes more local government complaints
Article Abstract:
The local government ombudsman received 15,500 complaints about local maladministration in 1994, although in 70% of cases there was insufficient evidence to justify further investigation. Most complaints were based on excessive delays in taking appropriate action. Few complaints resulted in formal reports of injustice.
