Shelter for the middle class
Article Abstract:
London's Labour councils are selling off social housing and replacing them with owner-occupied dwellings. The policy, part of a deliberate gentrification process, also involves preventing poor people from moving into the areas. Newham council has earmarked large stretches of riverside land in the Docklands for private development but will not build new social housing there. Critics say that councils should be careful about exporting housing needs to other London boroughs and that the city's total housing requirements should be considered.

RICS fury with new DOE contamination guidelines
Article Abstract:
The UK government's new draft guidelines on contaminated land are extremely hard to understand and would not be suitable for implementation, according to the RICS. This organisation is calling for regulations which will be fair to all concerned and also cut pollution, boost the efficient working of the land market and ensure that the best possible use is made of land. There is particular concern that local authorities lack the necessary skills to implement the guidelines.
