Steps to regeneration: Urban Development Corporations have come a long way from the days when government leaders championed their cause
Article Abstract:
The Urban Development Corporations were set up between 1981 and 1993, becoming responsible for around 16,000ha of derelict land. Their aim was to regenerate designated areas in decline, bringing land and buildings back into effective use, encourage new industry and making housing and social facilities available. Regeneration was patchy and sporadic before the introduction of the development corporations, and a major bonus is ease of planning in redevelopment areas.
